Comparing Business Security Systems and Home Security Systems

In a perfect world we would be able to leave our doors unlocked and not worry about our safety or possessions. Unfortunately, in the real world, there are criminals. It is pathetic that those of us who have worked hard to build our homes and businesses have to take extra measures to protect them, but that is the reality of life. One way to protect your home or business is with quality home or business security systems. There are many different security systems on the market, and it is important to select the right system to meet your needs. Some systems are sold as a package which includes a set of predetermined component. Other security alarm systems are tailored to the specific needs of the home of business which they will be installed in.

Whether you are considering home or business security systems, it should have several basic components. Almost all security alarms are comprised of a system of wired circuits with switches at the doors and windows. If a door or window is opened it simply opens the circuit which alerts the control unit. The control unit alerts the siren, the monitoring agency, or both. The weakness in this basic setup is, of course, the glass windows. If you do not have burglar bars or security gates behind all of the glass doors and windows, you will also need glass breakers. Glass breakers are electronic devices in a security system which recognize the sound frequencies of breaking glass and alert the alarm system’s control unit.

There are many other optional components which may or may not suit the needs of your home or business security systems. First you need to decide exactly what you want to accomplish with your security system. If you are buying a security system for your home, your main objective is safety for yourself and the people you care about. You will also want to protect your sentimental belongings. Smoke detectors and carbon dioxide detectors should be installed.

If you are having business security systems installed, you should consult your insurance company. Many insurance companies will offer discounts if your security system meets certain standards. You may consider a silent alarm which will alert the police but not the intruders. This makes it more likely that an intruder will be caught. Video surveillance systems can be installed in homes, but they are costly and are much more practical in a business. Video systems can be monitored in house, recorded by a DVR, or monitored off-site via an internet connection. Off-site monitoring is very affordable and the criminal cannot destroy the evidence once he or she has been filmed.

Regardless of whether you are considering home or business security systems, you will need a battery backup system. This will allow your entire system to continue working in the event of a power outage. Without this feature a burglar could simply cut the power to your home or business and break in at any time without setting off the alarm. Another great feature is wireless monitoring. This uses a wireless signal like a cell phone to alert the monitoring company in the event that the phone lines are down. There are many options to consider if you are buying a home or business security system, but spending a small amount of time doing research can help you tailor your security system to your specific needs.

Critical Thinking for Your Business Security

When considering how to secure your business it pays to think critically about your security needs and about potential access points for intruders. There are three basic levels of physical security to consider when seeking to protect your business, assets, and property from thieves, robbers, and other intruders. The three levels you should consider when designing a plan for your business security system are the interior, the inner perimeter, and the outer perimeter. Each of these levels will be discussed below. Implementing multiple layers of security at the outer, inner, and interior perimeters will significantly increase the security of your business enterprise.

Security in the outer perimeter.

The outer perimeter of your business property refers to the property lines outlined in your rental or purchase statement for the land on which your business is situated. To secure the outer perimeter you must have control over which individuals have access, whether through walking or driving onto your business property. An example of an extreme way to secure your business property perimeter is by use of an armed guard, or several along with a front gate and a barbed wire fence surrounding the property. On the other extreme, the outer perimeter needs for your business may be satisfied by nothing beyond a basic hedge. When deciding the level of security to implement in your outer perimeter you will need to consider the amount of money you have available to purchase or enforce a particular measure of security compared to the risk of intrusion from a criminal  as well as what would be at risk if such an intrusion were to occur.

Security in the inner perimeter.

The inner perimeter of your business property refers to the walls, windows, and doors of the building or buildings in which your business is situated. Most businesses and individuals choose to secure the inner perimeters of their properties by alarm systems, locks, and keys. Locks and keys are designed to keep unwanted individuals from having access to your business. The alarm system, in contrast, is designed to warn you when an individual has breached the inner perimeter. Critical thinking here involves judicious storage and control of your keys and alarm codes. Your business security will be severely compromised if individuals are able to copy your keys or codes without your knowledge.

Security in the interior.

Finally, the interior perimeter of your business property refers to the inside of your building itself. Many businesses choose to invest in additional security equipment such as cameras for protection at this level; they are used not only to monitor the insides of the property, but to provide a visual record of crimes that do occur, allowing for investigation and potential identification of intruders at a later time. Additional methods to protect the interior include security guards, paid or volunteer floor marshals, and motion detectors, which are a simple way to detect the movements of intruders; some motion detectors can be connected to alarm systems, further adding to the level of protection available for the interior perimeter.

How to Find Professional and Courteous Alarm System Monitoring Companies

If you’ve ever tried hiring an outside contractor to install something at your home or place of business, you’re probably quite aware that there are many providers out there that are not worth their salt. So, you are probably also aware of how critical it is to make sure that you’re hiring a professional and courteous security monitoring company when you finally come to the conclusion that having alarm system monitoring in your home or place of business is an absolute necessity. But how do you find such a professional and courteous alarm company without wasting countless hours doing what seems like never-ending research? This guide will go into a few ways that you can make sure that you locate a professional and courteous home security monitoring company without wasting a lot of your time and energy on a lost effort.

First off, once you’re in the market for a professional and courteous alarm system monitoring company, you will want to locate your local yellow pages phone book and find the section of the phone book that lists local contractors and companies in the area that offer professional alarm system monitoring. Once you have located a few companies that appear professional, you’ll want to call each of these companies and ask them about their experience and track record. Though you may think you are doing this to learn about their track record and experience, which is important, the main reason you are doing this is to find out if they are being courteous and professional while discussing such topics on the phone. More often than not, if they are not friendly when you first contact them on the phone, they will be not very professional and not very courteous when you actually hire them to do the job. Once you have confirmed that who you are talking to on the phone is professional, patient, and courteous, you’re ready to proceed to the next step of screening the alarm system monitoring company that you have chosen.

Next, you will want to ask who ever you are talking to on the phone for a list of current clients who do not mind being used as referrals. If the company refuses to oblige, you have most likely found a company that is not professional and not qualified to be contracted for your alarm system monitoring needs, since they either do not have any satisfied customers or are very inexperienced. If, however, they do oblige, you will want to contact each of the clients they gave you and inquire about whether they are satisfied with their current service by this particular company and if they would recommend them to their friends and family. You should also inquire about how long they have been using the company, since this is often a telltale sign of whether or not they are actually satisfied with the service, since they would have most likely switched to a different company already if they weren’t happy with the service they’re receiving.

Understanding the Use of Your Security Equipment

Alright, so you have finally taken the leap of faith and outfitted your home or business with security equipment. You don’t have a clue how to use it, so you have to  learn how to properly operate it.  This guide will go into detail about how you use your security equipment, as well as what not to do with your security equipment.

You’ve taken the first step and had the equipment installed. Now take the time to read the manual and get a good understanding how to use the system and what the best use is of each operational point. Although reading a user manual may seem like a cruel and boring task, it is necessary if you are to ever learn how to properly use your security equipment. After all, what’s the point of investing in security equipment if you don’t really understand how to use it? You might as well have left your property as it was before, without security equipment. A mismanaged security system is as useful as no security system at all.

Start the task by reading thru the table of contents and find out where the introduction is located. Reading the introduction will give you a better understanding of how your security equipment works before you get into the nitty-gritty details of how to operate your security equipment in an effective manner. After reading through the introduction of your user manual, you’ll want to proceed to the next section listed about how to properly arm your security equipment.

Learning how to arm your home security monitoring system is absolutely critical to the proper use and protection of your home or residence. The term “arm” means that you are effectively turning on your security equipment so that it may monitor the area you have it set to monitor for any unwanted visitors. Most security systems have a somewhat complicated arming process, so you may want to opt to review this section of your user manual a few times so that you will have an effective understanding of how to properly arm your equipment.

Though learning how to arm your system up is critically important, learning how to do disarm is just as important. Disarming your home alarm may mean the difference between you successfully turning off your equipment or having the local police called because it detected you coming home and not an unwanted intruder. In order to learn how to properly disarm your system, you’ll want to find the section of your user manual that discusses how to disarm and review it thoroughly. Unlike arming your system, disarming your system is usually a far easier process to learn and execute. It usually only consists of pressing a disarm button and dialing a simple four digit code that you programmed into the device when it was first installed.
